Alright guys start chipping in when you want to.
I am not a very good coon trapper buy any means, but I hope to learn and keep improving my trapping skills. I will share what i know in this thread.
Raccoon are land animals, but are frequently around water. They eat fruits and some vegetables ( corn is the only one that I know of. ), fish, crawdads, frogs, sweet things , like donuts, marshmallows, syrup, twinkies and stuff like that, and more. Raccoons can be found in alot of places, from rivers and creeks to suburbs and towns. They are in the woods, around water sources, fields and pastures, old barns and buildings, and they can be seen around a resturaunt or other places dumpster. Good locations to find coon sign are the edges of fields, in or by old buildings, farms, where a creek goes from wide to narrow, or where a point goes out into the creek and coons love culverts!
Some traps that are good for coon are 1 1/2 coil or long spring, #2 coil or long springs, 160 conibears, 220 conibears, any dog proof traps ( coon cuffs, little grizz), snares and cage traps.
Some good sets for coon are pocket sets, blind sets, dirt hole sets, shelf sets, bucket sets, natural cubbies, cinder block sets, flat sets, and many more.
To make a cinder block set you will need a cinder block, bait and 1 or 2 traps (depending on how you want the set to be.). If you want to use 2 traps you need to cover one hole so that one one side you can only get to that one, and on the other side you can only get to the other hole. Find a good coon location and take your block and find where you want to put it. You can use a backing if you want. Put your block where you want it and pull your traps out. If you have a backing, set your trap in front of the block, if you don't have a backing, set one trap on bothe sides of the block. Then pull out your bait . If you have a backing, put the bait in a hole, if you don't have one, put the bait in both holes. Then add some lure if you want.
Ok guys I want to hear some more coon trapping information!
